Halfway! Week 20

Hard to believe, but this is already the midway (if not more) point in the pregnancy. Little boy is kicking up a storm and last night was the first time he was pretty active while i was (trying to) sleep(ing).

More updates soon - you should see the state of the apartment! Things are packed in boxes and strewn left and right... ugh.

Citrus does not mean a girl!

My crazy cravings for citrus (oranges and lemons in particular) is supposedly a marker for having a little girl... I guess that's why they're wives' tales!

We're thrilled to announce that we're expecting a son. My amazing husband surprised me with the news - I left the ultrasound not knowing the gender, and the information tucked away in an envelope. The next day, he presented me with a gift wrapped in yellow paper - a package of onesies, top one reading 'handsome'. Darn straight! If he's anything like his father, he'll be first adorable then crazy handsome. ;)

I'm sure due to a combination of hormones and anticipation, I opened the package and promptly burst into tears. All I heard was his nervous question: Are these good tears? Absolutely. Just overwhelmed by the enormity of finding out my little bean... has grown into a little boy. And was zipping around like crazy during the ultrasound - which is by the way the best video I have ever seen. Keep on kicking, son. I can't wait for your father unit to be able to feel you from the outside. I want to share!

Our Dinner: Stuffed Acorn Squash

With the pregnancy, I know it's important to eat healthy balanced meals more than ever. Sometimes I get stumped - I couldn't possibly think of something new and delicious to try. A great new thing I'm trying is to eat more seasonally. Honestly, this is a tough concept for me being a Phoenix native since our seasons are hot, hot, hot and warm. I've been taking inspiration from blogs, and have been experimenting more with squash. Spaghetti squash was a big hit (seriously: make it. It's awesome.), so last night's dinner was focused around another common gourd: acorn squash.

Stuffed Acorn Squash with White Beans, Mushrooms & Wild Rice
Cut 1 medium acorn squash in half horizontally; remove seeds. Place on a baking sheet sprayed with cooking spray, cut side down. Bake at 375 degrees for 45 minutes or until tender. While squash is cooking, sauté 1/2 cup chopped onion, 1/2 cup chopped mushroom, 1/3 cup white beans and 1 clove chopped garlic in 2 teaspoons olive oil until soft, about 3-5 minutes. Add 1 cup cooked wild or brown rice and continue to stir until heated through, about 1 minute more. Set aside. Remove squash from the oven, stuff each half with the rice and bean mixture, then top each half with 2 tbsp parmesan cheese. Place in oven again and cook an additional 10 minutes. {recipe credit: online}

Very yummy, and even the Mr. liked it. (I wouldn't be anywhere culinary-skills wise without his open minded-ness - thanks, hon!) Of course, we had our suggestions for future takes. There is a lot of squash compared to the filling, so additional spices in the filling would up the ante (it was kind of bland for us). Additionally, this recipe as stated is vegetarian but adding some crumbly sausage would be another way to add flavor. I am also thinking some sage would be good... either way, I can tell we'll try this again.

Day Trip :: Castle Hot Springs

It was a pretty momentous weekend - the husband's birthday, and our first weekend with the Jeep! We decided to take a day trip on the Castle Hot Springs trail. This took us through Wittman (Hi Larry and Stacy!) and Morristown, and then through some of the best scenery Arizona has to offer. Classic, really.

We couldn't believe our luck with the excellent weather, and made a few stops along the way to play with the pup and then of course took a lunch break.

Options

So I have to laugh, sitting here so early on a Saturday morning... chatting with my mom and husband about "plan C". In this case, it's because she has arrived to be driven to the airport (we're super close), and after loading luggage, etc. into the brand-new-to-us-so-exciting-oh-my-gosh Jeep... it won't start. I go downstairs with the X keys, kind of chuckling, kind of annoyed. We planned to go for a day trip  in the Jeep today. Ah well, at least we HAVE a plan B, says Mom. And that's what makes me laugh, because invariably in my nuclear household there are more vehicles than people or necessity warrant. If the X didn't start (it did, don't worry), we could just take her truck. This might be a "you had to be there" sort of joke. Like, you had to live in the family for the past 28 years to get it. Oh well.

C'est la vie, eh?

I'm feeling particularly French this morning, as I was reading a great new book during a bout of insomnia last night: Bringing Up Bebe, which is focused around how French parenting differs from American parenting. I'm only a few chapters in, but I'm already enjoying the research-based narrative and I appreciate the different points of view. I'll keep you posted.

Which reminds me: I think these hormones are much different than I expected them to be. Typically, my type-A personality can obsess over the smallest details, searching for perfection and worrying needlessly. Thanks, Mom. Right now, I'm definitely finding myself overwhelmed by emotion at interesting intervals (like the incredibly sappy text the hubby got on Thursday morning...), but more than that... I'm calm. I'm peaceful. This could be the calm before the storm, and I tell you what... even that doesn't freak me out. I'm taking every moment of this amazing journey and enjoying it to the fullest. If I'm being given the gift of introspection, thoughtfulness, calm and quiet joy, I will take it and be thankful.

Something that does surprise me, however, is the fact that we're very nearly halfway through this journey. Time is very slippery and unpredictable. Part of the reason is that we harbored this amazing little secret until just recently. Until we opened up, this 'having a baby' concept seemed unreal. And here we are, halfway. Amazing.

At this point, the man is off to a car parts store to hopefully purchase a new battery and solve all the problems. Then we can go on our trip. We'll all keep our fingers crossed.

Week 15

As newbies, we're pretty excited about documenting our journey through this pregnancy. Therefore, we absolutely have pregnancy photos! It's been a little hectic, so hopefully we can keep up. :)

And yes, those are prop glasses and lips - hard to see, but I figured I'd give the little one a smooch. I'm a dork, for sure.
